Meet our Trustee: Heather Munn

Meet Heather Munn, a long-term Camberwell resident and early years practitioner who is inspired by 1st Place’s holistic and nurturing approach.

“I always enjoyed working with the team and found their commitment to delivering the best possible education and care refreshing and inspiring.”

I am a long-time Camberwell resident, parent, and have been part of the early years workforce for more than 40 years. I had my daughter in 1998, just as Sure Start and children’s centres were developing, and watched the emergence of 1st Place with interest. In the early 2000s, I was employed by the London Borough of Southwark as part of the Early Years Consultancy team in the Blair/Brown New Labour years, and 1st Place was one of the settings I supported. I always enjoyed working with the team and found their commitment to delivering the best possible education and care — their thoughtfulness and holistic approach to babies, young children, and families — refreshing and inspiring.

I now work as an academic at the University of Greenwich and have been a Trustee for 8 years. It is wonderful to have real-life links into practice. I have been lucky enough to join the staff team on educational visits to Italy and Poland, and work closely with the Educational Lead and Nursery Managers to examine practice.

“Children are at the heart of all we do.”

As a Trustee Board, we have the responsibility of overseeing the wider mission of the charity, ensuring that the beneficiaries are well served and that children in our reach area are at the heart of all we do. Developing and maintaining services for children and their families is a huge challenge, and I am proud to be part of an organisation that truly strives to build a sense of community and be a beacon of excellence in our locality.
