Meet our Trustee: Ben Asmah
Meet Ben Asmah, our Vice Chair and a local dad, whose family benefited from 1st Place play sessions — now helping to shape the future of our nurseries and Family Hub. Ben’s on the left, in case you couldn’t guess.
I first heard about 1st Place in 2017 through the “stay and play” grapevine. There were usually leaflets near the door for other groups and events. Rhyme Time led to Chatter Time, which led to the Saturday dads’ group at Chumleigh Gardens. So, when my daughter Adwoa started nursery at Cambridge House in 2018, I already knew what 1st Place meant and that she would be in great hands.
Soon after, I saw an opportunity to get more involved by joining the Board of Trustees. I was drawn by the chance to gain leadership experience for my CV and connect more deeply with my daughter’s early education.
“It boosted my confidence and reignited my passion for my work.”
What I found, though, was far more rewarding. As a Trustee, I’ve been able to make a meaningful contribution, helping shape decisions that benefit the nurseries and the Best Start Centre. It has also had a profound impact on my own life. Working on the risk management strategy boosted my confidence and reignited my passion for my work — ultimately inspiring me to pivot from project management to a new career as an actuary.
Joining the Board has been a valuable experience for me, and I know it can be for you too.
