Why I Became a Parent Trustee — and What I Learned
Ever wondered what it’s like to be a parent trustee at 1st Place? Meet Kate Newman- a mum who decided to take on the role and discovered just how rewarding (and eye-opening) it could be. From learning what goes on behind the scenes to supporting families through the Best Start Family Hub, Kate shares her experience and why she recommends getting involved.
“Being a parent trustee has been one of the most rewarding ways to be involved in my daughter’s early education.”
When I joined the Board, I didn’t work in early education and knew very little about what it takes to run a high-quality nursery. Becoming a trustee gave me the chance to understand and contribute to the decisions that keep 1st Place the excellent nursery it is—decisions that directly impacted my daughter’s experience.
Being on the Board was the best way to see the work behind the scenes—the complex priorities the Director balances and to have a voice in shaping the organisation’s approach on many issues.
What many nursery parents don’t realise is that 1st Place is a Best Start Family Hub. Being a trustee means supporting this vital service too. Contributing to something that makes such a difference in Southwark has been both rewarding and eye-opening. Many families nearby lack a support network or disposable income, and for them, the Centre is a lifeline. Understanding the realities for staff working with these parents and children has been humbling and inspiring.
If you’re looking for a way to give back and learn more about your community, I would highly recommend becoming a trustee.
