National Year of Reading

The National Year of Reading is a celebration of books and the difference they can make in our lives. It’s all about inspiring a love of stories, helping children build confidence, spark creativity, and discover new worlds through reading.

Lots of organisations are coming together to make reading fun, showing that even a few minutes a day can make a big difference. We’ll also be joining in, with exciting reading events planned over the summer holidays.

Sharing stories together isn’t just great for learning, it’s a chance to laugh, imagine, and spend quality time together. From bedtime favourites to quick daytime reads, those little moments really do add up.

Families can also enjoy Bookstart, with free packs available at our centre, filled with lovely books and fun ideas to help bring stories to life at home, perfect for creating special, memorable reading moments together.

Did you know you can get a free children's book every month?

Join the Imagination Library. Families with children under 5 get a free book every month and it's completely free.

Tips for encouraging your child to read:

  • Let them choose – following their interests builds enthusiasm.

  • Read together – sharing a story makes reading feel special.

  • Chat about stories – talking brings books to life and deepens understanding.

  • Mix books in with toys – keeping them in toy boxes or play areas helps children see books as something fun to choose, just like their toys.

  • Bring stories to life – use story sacks, props or soft toys to act out parts and make stories interactive.

  • Create a cosy reading spot – a comfy space can make it feel like a treat.

  • It’s okay to move on – not every book will be the right fit.

  • Keep it relaxed – little and often works better than pressure.
