Child-Led Learning: What It Means in Early Years (And Why It Matters) 

When we talk about child-led learning and play in nurseries and preschools, it can sometimes spark a few misconceptions. Does it mean children are left to their own devices? Is it a free-for-all without structure? The answer is no and at 1st Place Nurseries, where we embrace the Reggio Emilia approach, we’d love to share why. 

 

🚫 Myth: “Child-led learning means no teaching happens.” 

Truth: Child-led play doesn’t mean teachers take a backseat, it means we follow the child’s lead to create meaningful, engaging, and developmentally appropriate learning experiences. Early years educators are skilled observers, facilitators, and co-learners. When a child shows an interest in pouring water, stacking blocks, or pretending to cook, we see opportunities to explore maths, science, communication, and social skills. 

🚫 Myth: “There’s no structure in child-led learning.” 

Truth: There is structure, but it also flexible and responsive. In a Reggio-inspired setting like ours, the environment is carefully prepared to spark curiosity and invite exploration. Materials are intentional and activities are rich in open-ended possibilities. Structure comes through rhythm, routine, and thoughtful guidance, rather than rigid schedules. 

🚫 Myth: “Babies and toddlers can’t really lead their learning.” 

Truth: Even our youngest children, from 6 months onward, show preferences, curiosity, and drive to explore the world. Through sensory play, movement, secure attachments, they are already taking the first steps in leading their own learning. Our role? To nurture that exploration safely and supportively.

The hundred languages of children: Children express themselves in countless ways, from drawing to dancing to dramatic play and we honour them all. 

Teachers as co-learners: Our educators don’t simply instruct, they learn alongside the children, asking questions, reflecting, and co-creating knowledge. 

Environment as the third teacher: Our learning spaces are designed to provoke wonder, invite dialogue, and support child-led discovery. 

 

Why It Matters 

When children have the freedom to follow their interests, they build confidence, resilience, and a lifelong love of learning. They learn to make decisions, solve problems, and collaborate with others.  

Child-led play isn’t about “doing nothing”, it’s about doing everything with intention, empathy, and curiosity.
