1st Place is growing and a new nursery will open soon to serve more members of our community.

1st Place at Lorrimore Square- nursery under construction

1st Place at Lorrimore Square joins our two existing outstanding settings, with the launch scheduled for the first week of November. Located in St Pauls Church, Lorrimore Square, it is easily accessible by public transport. A series of open mornings are planned, so parents who are interested in applying for a place can explore our new early education setting and talk to our experienced staff.
1st Place is a charity that started 10 years ago by parents, who as members of the local community aspired to create a friendly and safe environment where their children could play, grow and learn. We strive to provide this supportive environment to ensure that every parent and child is given the chance to realise their potential and enjoy a good quality of life.

‘We are really pleased to be opening our third nursery in partnership with St Pauls Lorrimore Square and Southwark Council. It will enable us to provide early education to families within our wider reach area as well as to offer more free places for 2 year old children, and a base for our Children’s Centre family support team’ – Nicola Howard, Director

Our new nursery will soon open its doors to welcome 34 full time places for children aged 6 months to 5 years old and 32 part time places for children eligible for free 2 year old early education. Influenced by the Reggio Emilia approach, the children will have the opportunity to work in the studio with our resident Atelierista, learning through creative play. Located in Lorrimore Square the nursery is surrounded by green space, and is close to Pasley Park and Walworth Garden Farm.
We have a proven track record with our two existing nurseries rated as Outstanding by Ofsted and we are committed to offer high quality early education to children and make their wellbeing our first priority. Our qualified staff members are here to support children and their families in their learning journey.

‘Our aim is to create a supportive and a stimulating environment for children while they are away from home. Having a Reggio Emilia inspired approach we encourage children to experiment with different activities and explore their interests in our spacious and well lit rooms’ – Gaynor Wheeler, Early Education Manager

The history of St Paul’s Church, Lorrimore Square

St Pauls Church - 1st Place at Lorrimore Square

‘St Paul’s Church, Lorrimore Square was built in 1960, after the previous Victorian church was bombed in 1941, on the ‘longest night’ of the blitz which decimated London. The new St Pauls that rose from the ashes had as its vision service to the community, and particularly to the young people of the area. Many people still remember the impact that the ‘Crossed Swords’ youth club had on their lives, providing fun friendship and personal development. Thereafter, St Paul’s has been host to many therapeutic voluntary groups who have used the downstairs Lorrimore Centre and other parts of the church complex. So the priest and people of St Paul’s are delighted to continue the tradition of social outreach and in the spirit of the creation of St Paul’s, by working with 1st Place to provide a nursery and family centre, again for the young people of the area and their families’ – Reverend Katy Hacker Hughes

The new nursery will also provide offices for our family support team, which will enable them to have a base within the west of our reach area. We know that being a parent can be demanding and at times feel overwhelming. Our family support team are available to provide help and advice, and if they can’t help, they will know someone who can. 1st Place offers a range of free activities for you and your children from fun play learning sessions to courses and counselling.

‘One of our team members will be based at 1st Place at Lorrimore Square to continue to help local families and offer one to one support making it easy for you to have access to information and guidance to meet your needs’ – Elena Salazar, Family Support Manager
